The Disconnect of Perception in Rural Educational Leadership
Público DepositedIn this study the findings demonstrated the leadership practices perceptions of rural elementary principals do not align with their supervising superintendents. This research is important in that it has implied a disconnect between the rural elementary principal and his/her superintendent regarding the role of principal as an instructional leader. The findings of this study provide critical information for rural administrative teams. The results of this study demonstrated that rural principals’ and superintendents’ perceptions of the actual leadership practices of an acting principal are significantly different. The Kouzes and Posner’s (2012) Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership were the framework by which the leadership practices were defined. Educational settings do not adhere to a cookie cutter replication all generating the same results. This study indicated there is a problem in rural administrative team perception of demonstrated leadership practice. Equity issues, role variability, lack of resources, sociocultural challenges and a polarizing community context all have to be contended with in rural schools. For rural administrators the findings imply that rural principals and superintendents need to be informed about instructional leadership and create an aligned partnership.
